I love office supplies - notebooks, pens, correspondence cards by Crane's, roll-on-glue-tape, folders... Yes, I love them all. And this is the only place other than Bromfield's Pen Shop that has a decent selection of Fountain Pen Inks (and fountain pens) - they don't carry Noodler's, but they DO have Pelikan, Waterman, & a few others - both bottled and cartridges. And a variety of Clairefontaine notebooks - yay!
[1 point off for lack of friendly service - they're not MEAN, but not particularly helpful or cheerful either - for that, one must visit the Artist & Craftsmen Supply store in Central Square.]Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Leighann F.New York, NY3164961694Jan 23, 2008
The practicality of Staples meets the creativity of something like the Paper Source combined with Pearl Paint (or Michael's?)!
Want to get organized? Bob Slates handles that with a neat assortment of boxes, bins, folders and a variety of labeling options.
Want to send someone the very best while supporting smaller, artist-created ventures? Bob Slate has a large variety of cute cards and great prices.
Want to jot down your ideas as they come, perhaps the next great novel or a spot you must simply yelp? Journals and notepads galore - guaranteed to have one that fits your style.
Ahhh, so you're the creative type? Mr. Slate has oodles of paint (water, oil, acrylic) plus top quality brushes, paper, portfolios, not to mention crayons, markers, charcoal and pastels!
Something for artists, writers and even the occasional clutter bug looking to organize!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Cath K.Concord, MA332Aug 29, 2007
Oh Bob Slate Stationer, how I love you. Let me count the ways...
Great selection of notebooks--moleskine, clairefontaine, rhodia--yay!
Quirky and funny; beautiful and unusual greeting cards--I love buying cards there because whenever I send one of their cards, the recipient always comments on how (funny, beautiful, different) it was.
Neat and colorful office supply "organizers"--foldable bins, translucent folders--the works.
Good selection of Baggallini bags and other totes, messenger bags.
And G. Lalo stationery.............ooooohhhh!!!
For anyone who loves office supplies, this is like going to the Office Supply Store Hall of Fame...Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mar 26, 2008
I love this place. I get happy just walking by it. Great stationery, notebooks, address books, typing paper (recycled choices too) folders, pens, art supplies, organizers, bags, cool toys, cards. The people who work here are really smart, helpful and clearly love their jobs. It is virtually impossible for me to come in here without buying something.

What is it about stationery stores that make me so incredibly, disproportionately happy? Perhaps it's the cute note cards, the calendars that feature work by some of my favorite artists, the colorful organizational tools, or maybe it's the fun, quirky little gadgets that don't seem to have any other purpose than to make someone smile. I may never know, but I do know that I always have an enjoyable experience at Bob Slate Stationer.
Adorable 'Very Hungry Caterpillar' stationery? Check. Everyone's favorite Moleskin notebooks? Double check. A calendar featuring Edward Gorey's 'Gashlycrumb Tinies'? Yes, please. Add calligraphy pens, colored pencils, stamps, assorted paper goods, and a score of other art supplies, and you start to get the picture.
Of course, your vibrant, quirky organizational tools and art supplies tend to be a little bit more expensive than the stuff you might find at Office Depot. But hey, that shouldn't be surprising; you get what you pay for. Bob Slate Stationer is basically my equivalent of a toy store; not where I shop for my school (or, at this point, life) supplies, but every now and then, I let myself splurge so I can feel like a cool kid with my new stationery.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Francesca R.Thornliebank, United Kingdom10156764Nov 26, 2008
Every semester when I was in grad school I would kit myself out with the creative, fun, and extremely useful stationery options from Bob Slate. Notebooks with brilliant covers, document organizers of every ilk, pencil cases, day planners, colorful pens and pencils...they had everything I needed to keep my brain stimulated during my 3-hour-long night classes.
This store is also great for browsing. You can pick up or just peruse calendars, cards, stamps, stickers, calligraphy supplies, totes, wrapping & gift materials, stuff for organizing and filing, magnets, clay and markers (and more!). You can get custom made invitations or thank you cards and signature stamps.
This is a fun little place, not immediately obvious as such due to its crisp and functional business name. Stop in here for creative school, art, gift and browsing fun!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jules H.Boston, MA9119Sep 21, 2010
Huge selection of notebooks, stationery, calendars, drawing materials -- I come in just to look around and admire the stock. And an awesome selection of pens. You COULD go to Blick or another big store for this stuff, but Bob Slate is so much better, and more specialized -- and yes, there are two Harvard Square locations, on Mass Ave and Church Street.
It's hard to price this place, because they carry a range of stock. I chose two $$ because it's not dirt-cheap, and you can buy very nice brands here.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Molly R.Somerville, MA518May 15, 2007
if you are a notebook fiend like myself, you will totally dig on Bob Slate on Mass Ave (also in Brattle Sq). Bobby's got a large variety of notebooks, pens, and other assorted office supplies. Consider it a quirky version of Staples. A great place to do school supply shopping or casually picking up a Bob Slate notebook.

I could spend hours in this store. If you are looking for any type of paper product you can find it here...the cards and invitations are adorable, the notebooks are great, and there is a ton of stuff that you need but never knew you did. They have a great selection of paper....different stocks and colors. It is a bit disorganized and there have been times where I've found the *perfect* invitation or card to only find they have one package.

Like Jessica R., I have only been to this store for sketchbooks and drawing materials. And for that, I was totally satisfied. They had everything I needed and then some. For artists and aspiring artists in Harvard Sq. (of which there are many), I would recommend this place first.
