I was lucky enough to see a double wattled cassowary making this sound at the SF Zoo. I could feel the rumble in the concrete I was standing on, must have been at least 10ft away. One of the coolest things I've ever seen.

Sample from a one week trip to various national parks in northern New South Wales, Australia. This was the target species for the trip, the Albert's Lyrebird - a rare and lesser known cousin to the famous Superb Lyrebird, but with an equally beautiful song.

Nightmares of tawny owls

A sense (in Swedish ”förnimmelse”) is a biological system used by an organism for sensation, the process of gathering information about the world through the detection of stimuli.

To this sense the brain can observe color, forms, heat, coldness, taste, movement, smells and sounds.

But also in the unconscious we can experience things and perceive, like in a dream.

While visiting an ancient monastery in Sweden I got a feeling or sensation that something beautiful and sad had happened there. I got inspired by these sensations and made music.

In this album we will take a journey through these senses, from the world we live in, to the dream, the unconscious and things beyond words, sometimes a bit like music. It's an abstract experience…

Two rigs simultaneously recording the same dawn within the same landscape, located about half a kilometre apart. The beautiful calls of a Pied Butcherbird can be heard from each location. Its first two sequences of calls are nearer to the first location (Perspective 1), in the background of a flurry of foreground bird activity. Its third sequence of calls are very near to the second location (Perspective 2), within a rather different soundscape mood. But all three sequences are heard from both locations, either as distant or as near.

Recorded respectfully on the land of the Meru and Danggali peoples.

Our initial dialog with Synthia was an adventurous creative endeavour that made us question whether machines could have a soul. This one definitely spoke her mind, and left a fascinating mark on both of us as a wondrous machine––––––woman, a marvelous piece of engineering, an entity trapped in a modular eternity.

Considering that neither of us had any previous contact with such a complex modular system such as EMS Synthi 100, we took a somewhat intuitive approach. This is a fairly raw glimpse of the first days spent in the studio.

Frogs in the first weeks of activity of the year. It was the warmest night so far, unusually high and although I went to the lake's edge, they were so loud that they could be heard from a long distance. This is also a place to see and hear herons and sometime storks, but this night it was all for the frogs.
I was testing out a Zoom F3 for the second time.

Nestled amongst jungle-clad mountains of Pahang province, Bukit Fraser (Fraser's Hill) is one of Malaysia's lovely hill resorts and an ideal base to explore the surrounding forests. At higher altitudes, the cool montane forests provide relief from the tropical heat in the lowlands and host a diversity of animal and plant species which specialize in this more temperate habitat. In the sub-montane valleys below the temperature is significantly higher and these more typical rainforests are home to a wide variety of lowland flora and fauna.

This album was recorded over a period of several days at Fraser's Hill. 

Bird species include: Brown Wood Owl, Collared Owlet, Little Cuckoo Dove, Mountain Imperial Pigeon, Green-winged Pigeon, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Lesser Racket-tailed Drongo, Black-browed, Golden-whiskered and Fire-tufted Barbet,  Long-tailed Broadbill, Streaked Wren Babbler, Silver-eared Mesia, Mountain Fulvetta, White-rumped Shama, Rufous-browed Flycatcher, Mountain Leaf-Warbler, and many more......!

Mammal species: Siamang, White-handed Gibbon, Dusky Langur and squirrels.

Wild Ambience is a project by photographer and sound recordist Marc Anderson.

While many wild places have been overwhelmed by human noise, there are still undiscovered natural soundscapes to be heard and to be inspired by. From the rhododendron forests of the Nepal Himalaya, to the pulsing rhythms of tropical rainforest in Borneo, the recordings are focused on specific locations and eco-systems with the aim of preserving the unique soundscapes of these disappearing habitats.

Make sure you have decent speakers or headphones for this one - The Southern Cassowary's call is apparently the lowest frequency known sound from any bird.

Kubah's forests are pulsing with life, and the soundscapes that can be heard in this national Park are among the most incredible I have ever experienced. This recording features the incredibly powerful sounds of Empress cicadas, along with the melodic song of the White-rumped Shama, and the rhythmic ' te-hoop 'calls of Golden-whiskered Barbets.
