Abstract
Shrubby or seldom arborescent bamboos; rhizomes amphipodium. Culms pluricaespitose, erect; internodes terete, grooved above branches; pith spongy; nodes flat or slightly prominent. Bud 1; branches 1–3 per node, more apically, adnate to culm at the base, usually without secondary branches. Culm leaves persistent or tardily deciduous; auricles and oral setae present or absent; blades erect or reflexed, deciduous. Foliage leaves several per branchlet; auricles present or absent; ligules short or tall; transverse veins distinct. Inflorescence an open raceme or panicle, on upper nodes; spikelets with petioles, linear, florets 2–10 or rarely more; rachilla internodes sinuous, disarticulated; glumes 2; lemma sickle-curved, with many longitudinal and transverse veins, apex acuminate; palea 2-keeled, longitudinally veined, transverse veins present between keels, apex acuminate; lodicules 3; stamens 3 (4 or 5), filaments free; style 1, stigmas 3, plumose and waved. Caryopses, ventrally grooved. New shoots late spring to early summer.
