Abstract

Shrubby or arborescent bamboos. Rhizomes sympodium. Culms unicaespitose, erect, a ring of aerial roots at middle or lower nodes; internodes terete, slightly flattened on the branching side or with longitudinal ridges and grooves, seldom round as a whole, cavity often with sesquiterpene aromatic compounds; nodes slightly or strongly prominent. Branches 3 at mid-culm nodes, branch nodes strongly prominent, sometimes lower nodes of main branches with aerial roots. Culm leaves deciduous, usually longer than internodes, with sparse brown setae abaxially, the top narrow, prominent or concave; auricles inconspicuous; ligules conspicuous, fimbriate; blades linear or lanceolate, erect or recurved. Foliage leaf auricles tiny or absent, oral setae conspicuous; blades narrow, secondary veins usually 2–4 pairs, transverse veins rectangulate. Inflorescence paniculate, terminal, short, sparse, the base of flowering branches usually with pubescence and scale-shaped bracts; pedicels flat; florets 4–12 per spikelet, the upmost floret sterile; rachilla internodes flat adaxially, sulcate, the upper with dense pubescence; glumes 2; lemma blunt, 7–9-veined, transverse veins conspicuous; palea slightly longer than lemma, 2-keeled, blunt; lodicules 3, apex ciliate; stamens 3, filaments free, anthers yellow; ovary glabrous, styles 2 or 1, short, stigmas 2, plumose. Caryopses without the ventral groove. New shoots autumn. Flowering and fruiting spring or extending to autumn.
