Abstract

Work on the taxonomy of the genus Fuirena Rottb. is in progress. The genus Fuirena (Cyperaceae, Scirpeae) comprises about 30 species distributed throughout wet habitats of tropical countries. In East Africa, Fuirena is represented by 14 species, five of which are recorded in Uganda, 12 are known from Kenya, and all species grow in Tanzania. The genus Fuirena is currently classified into three subgenera, two of which were previously treated as distinct genera, and the three subgenera are delimited on the basis of the morphology and anatomy. Additional data obtained from general morphology and nutlet microstructural features, anatomy, palynology, and cytology, support the current classification.
