Grammatophyllum Bl.

Abstract

Grammatophyllum is a genus of 13 generally large, robust, tropical, epiphytic, sympodial orchids distributed across Malesia to the southwestern Pacific Islands, and northwards to the Marianas. Majority of the species occur in the Philippines. Pseudobulbs are clustered, either cane-type sheathed by leaf bases or bulbous, smooth and unsheathed. Roots are white, erect and branching. Leaves are thin, narrowly lanceolate and numerous or elliptic, undulate and not more than five. Inflorescence is erect or drooping, commonly bearing large flowers of Cymbidium shape, cream or green with brown blotches. Lip carries three low keels. Plants in bloom are spectacular because separate pseudobulbs carry inflorescences crowded with flowers that open in rapid succession and are long-lasting (Fig. Gr 58.1). Plants growing close to water appear to be exceptionally floriferous (Figs. Gr 58.2 and Gr 58.3).
