Abstract
Neuwiedia is a primitive genus of orchids distributed from China to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands growing on leaf litter in dense shade at 150 - 1000 m (Comber 2001; Chen et al. 2009). The eight species and four varieties are all terrestrial herbs that occur in Malesia. Flowers of this genus have a short column with three fertile stamens rather than with pollinia, Plants are erect, terrestrial with stiff woody stems supported by long roots that push the stems above the ground. L eaves are many, long, elliptic, plicate, papery sheathing the stem at the base. Inflorescence is terminal, erect with numerous large floral bracts and resupinate, nodding flowers that do not open widely (Figs. Neu 74.1 and Neu 74.2).
