Valerie, a Czechoslovakian teenager living with her grandmother, is blossoming into womanhood, but that transformation proves secondary to the effects she experiences when she puts on a pair of magic earrings. Now seeing the world around her in a different light, Valerie must endure her sexual awakening while attempting to discern reality from fantasy as she encounters lecherous priest Gracian, a vampire-like stranger and otherworldly carnival folk.

-cinnamon-tography (main reason I enjoyed it)
-vampires
-the message (I think) being that adults are crusty vampires and if you wanna have fun join the young people and their orgies
-I think there’s a scene where one of the girls gets healed from being bit by a vampire by making out with Valerie so that’s cool
Negative points for:
-child nudity?
-incest rape scene?
-what the fuck was going on
If this were by a female director, it'd be a compelling menstrual-hut-power fantasy ode to Goddess Reproductive Magic, but that's not a movie that any man could make, so...
Disturbing crypto-pedo fantasy that reads like Charles Dodgson and Roman Polanski brainstorming on heavy doses of MDMA.
It's got vampires + a very girly magic-realism drawn from fairy-tales and dream-work. A bit kitsch, innit? In a good way, though, like a lo-fi Nazareno Cruz.
surely it can be possible to make art that explores childhood sexuality without actively sexualizing an actual child. i'm going to be honest if i didn't have to watch this for class i probably would not have finished it. if they simply cast an actress who wasn't a literal thirteen year old then i would be a lot less uncomfortable with this but i just cannot condone something that sexualizes an actual child so much

a czechoslovak new wave, pedo, fever dream, type of film where ugly, old men dressed as pasty vampires, deflower underage girls... of course this was directed by a guy.
the central theme of this gothic fairytale is a 13 year-old girl’s emerging womanhood. it’s filled to the brim with pure white symbolism, in contrast to sinister caricatures—drops of blood and the hyper sexualization of virginal femininity. i know it is cheap to say, but this would have genuinely flourished under a female direction. bewilderingly surreal, a pretty art-house film but felt like a pervasive and vulturine portrayal of a young girl’s blossoming.

Surreal fairytale dreamscape equal parts dysphoric vampire nightmare and euphoric visual feast, shot to perfection, loaded with symbolism, and constantly maintaining haziness.
Perhaps my favorite celluloid dream movie?
