Finally! A Western where the French are the villains! On this note, how the fuck did I not know France invaded Mexico and tried to colonize it during the Civil War and then lost badly?
One of Clint Eastwood's lesser known westerns is still a solid one regardless. Two Mules for Sister Sara makes his second collaboration with director Don Siegel, which was a pairing you could always count on more or less.
Set during the French-Mexico war, Clint stars as Hogan, a former Civil War-soldier while travelling through the Mexican desert encounters Sister Sara (Shirley MacLaine), a nun (who so she claims to be) who has been helping Mexican revolutionaries, and as a result is on the run from the French army. On a mission to capture a French fort for a cash reward, Hogan allows Sara to accompany her on his journey in exchange for information regarding the French army.

I've always had a soft spot for this one. It feels almost like one of Leone's spaghetti westerns, except with more of an odd-couple road trip vibe. This thing is almost entirely propelled by the chemistry between Eastwood and MacLaine, as they're constantly bickering and butting heads.
Don Siegel may lack the stylistic flourishes of Leone but he's no slouch as a director. I mean, this is the same dude who directed Dirty Harry, Escape From Alcatraz, and the original Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. And the picturesque Mexican desert setting and Morricone score really add some flavor here, elevating the whole affair considerably.
Eastwood may have been in better westerns, but this is still one that should never be overlooked. And it's made me realize that I need to check out more of Siegel's work.

Great dynamic between MacLaine and Eastwood. Siegel does his usual very solid job. It is still from that pre Dirty Harry period when Eastwood was already an A-lister but Hollywood didn't quite know what to do with his persona. The real superstar here is Gabriel Figueroa ofering some outstanding cinematography.
Nice blend of savage violence and poignant romance set in Mexico during the reign of the French in the aftermath of the US Civil War. Clint Eastwood plays a mercenary for the Juaristas fighting to overthrow the French under Maximilian and Shirley McClaine's a mysterious nun he comes across as she's about to be raped and then probably murdered by three gringo outlaws. You got the French soldiers, the Yaquis, the Juaristas, and suggestive dialog and banter about nun's and abstinence and all the Church's dispensations when situations arise. It mostly goes for a light touch but with expert action scenes, especially a trestle exploding as a train travels over it high above a ravine. Beautiful settings of deserts and mountains, captured by the legendary Gabriel Figueroa, and Ennio Morricone's score has one of those cool sound effects that he blended in to his scores Shirley McClaine sparkles in this.
Ole Clint is about to get a lesson in how a Mule feels as Sister Sara rides him and her donkey through all kinds of western dangers.
"Don't you want a woman of your own? ... What for? ... To share your name, bear your children, be a companion ... To ask me to quit drinking, quit gambling, and save my money? And to bitch about her aches and pains all day? No thanks!"

Shirley MacLaine acts circles around Eastwood here. Eastwood seems almost intimidated by how easy it all comes to her. The camera just loved certain actors more than it loved others. Nevertheless, they're both charming in this little nothing of a movie that I've liked since I was a little kid.
Sister, I don't mind shootin' em' for ya, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna sweat over 'em for ya.

A surprise and a half here. I say that mainly because of the film's less then assuring title for a western along with the odd pairing of Clint Eastwood and Shirley MacLaine. The film not only ends up better then expected but it's actually a damn good western. I should have known that Eastwood teaming up with director Don Siegel yet again would trump everything.
The most entertaining surprise of the film though is the on screen chemistry between Eastwood and MacLaine. It's an odd one to explain, it's like MacLaine's quirkiness tames Eastwood's crankiness. I could honestly not…

From Siegel I had only seen "Dirty Harry" and "Escape From Alcatraz", two of my favorite movies and now it seems to me that his partnership with Eastwood is infallible.
But better than Clint Eastwood here, one of my favorite actors and directors of all, was the performance of Shirley Maclaine. She's simply precious and completely overshadowed him in this movie. She, besides giving the humorous atmosphere that her face refers, is talented and poetic in staging the duality of nun and woman.

Acts more like a couple road trip, each one manipulating the other, understanding how to get along with each other, and their values with light themes on its political landscape in Mexico. Leans more into the comedic Western but their chemistry moves it along well with an incredible soundtrack from Morricone.
