Terrific paranoid thriller saddled with a useless and disturbingly rapey romance. It's not a dealbreaker—everything involving Robertson and Von Sydow is too choice—but every time the movie returns to Dunaway it deflates, and Pollack's proto-Soderberghian flourishes just make the love scene seem that much ickier, which is clearly not the intention. Hollywood sure knew how to end a movie in the '70s, though. I think I'd be down for a long national malaise if it meant getting big-budget star vehicles this arrestingly grim again.
Not the best conspiracy thriller, but maybe the one with the best final 5 minutes.
I may have mentioned before that I find Robert Redford's eyes to be beautiful. He has a little sadness in them, just the right amount, and a little squint he does that denies you just the right amount of the whites. They're blue, but they don't stand out like some blue eyes (cough Newman cough). They're subtle, but they are very expressive. With a face that seems prematurely lined, with such a famously handsome countenance, his eyes still stand out somehow. They are a work of art. There are some nice scenes here, like one where Redford visits his friend's wife (she doesn't know her husband is dead and he can't tell her), or the initial hit on the office. But even that feels unnecessary; Pollack always shows what could have been inferred, which would have made for something more obliquely paranoid. But he's going more for a spin on the romantic adventure, sort of a contemporary 39 STEPS. Maybe that's a miscalculation; a lot of people like to say that the wildly implausible romance derails this. Personally I think it smacks more of misogyny than implausibility. In any event, what I do find ridiculous is everyone's terrible OpSec. This is a movie in which a CIA analysis substation has an unsecured rear entrance and one over-the-hill uniform guard on the front door, and apparently has the same listed (!) phone number as the actual agency central line. #expertreviews

Another one of those flicks that improves on a second viewing. I'm not sure what happened in my first viewing, but this time I can appreciate this classic of a subcategory of films that plagued the cinema screens after the Watergate exposé, in which government intelligence organizations became public enemies of democracy. Uncut Gems for Protestants. Really love the scene where Redford stress eats a pretzel. He goes so fast it it could read as a gag, but he makes it real. Acting is so cool
