French secret service agent Josselin Beaumont is dispatched to take down African warlord N'Jala. I never understood how a man with a face like a melted frog could carry so much charm and manliness with him.
This movie has one of the best set ups to a revenge thriller I've seen in a while. An agent is betrayed by his home country and tortured in a foreign country. This gives him agency to destroy anything in his path to accomplish his goals, as he has the moral justification.
An elevated B-movie, it's quite ridiculous fun. You're always knowing that your protagonist is the smartest guy in the room. Unlike Bond, Belmondo doesn't play a suave guy, but rather kind of crass, yet irresistibly charming to all the women he encounters. I could have done with a little more action and a little less cat-and-mouse, but I still had a great time.

Belmondo trades in his cigarettes for a croissant but I don’t believe he’s ever looked quite so cool as under the golden haze of the Morricone theme tune.
Liquid strings pour down to hark the arrival of a legend from between the shadows of his own storied name in stone.
And still, as Bond with a bee in his bonnet — and a nose like he's just had a box with one — our leathery King comes crashing up into frame. With all the weight of a sly glance and slight tip of the skull of a man who knows exactly who is boss.
To silence all. And never once lose that spring in his step. A true Pro, in every damn definition of the word.
The Professional is a little bit more serious and cynical than other Belmondo films.
That said, Belmondo does a lot of things he always does, but this time he's against the law.
He wants revenge and he's very consequent at that.
His character is not really a nice person, but his enemies are more unlikable for sure.
I enjoyed the merciless storytelling and the cynical moments, it feels like a commentary about the state of france in the 80's.
Morricone's music is fantastic again, it got rythm and energy.
I could listen to it all day.
The action scenes have enough drive so that Belmondo can show his skills again, I really enjoy his comittment a lot.
The Profesional is another good Belmondo film and a little bit different than the others I've seen.
Very satisfyingly unornamented pulp misanthropy, it's shot like a TV show but you've got Jean-Paul in the lead with all his leathery and even occasionally clownish charm. Throw in some Morricone music (does this have any score at all apart from the main theme?) and you have a weird but tasty stew. Basically the French film equivalent of a Mack Bolan paperback, for good and ill. Great car chase.

Belmondo is king of Gallic cool so he can get away with walking into a cafe, dunking a croissant in a guy's coffee, utterly destroying said guy's face, then cracking a stupid grin and making a joke about the croissant being on the poor schmuck's tab. There's something almost obnoxiously French about the setting, the props, and the humor in the scene, but Belmondo is there like a shining beacon of movie stardom making it all seem so casually badass and witty.
Car chase fans: there's one in this by car stunt master Remy Julienne that is so overtly stylized it looks like a car commercial... and it's great.
A leathery Belmondo plays an ex-SDECE operator trying to assassinate a Françafrique puppet dictator and get revenge on his own people, who disavowed him and hung him out to dry in an African labor camp. Pretty unpleasant if not terribly exciting (although there's a pretty good car chase). You might be tempted to compare it to POINT BLANK, with the "hero" on a single-minded rogue mission exhibiting a total lack of empathy (the nicest term he uses to refer to his target is "gorilla", and in my favorite moment he callously drowns a woman in a bathtub), but it's not even a little bit stylish and beyond its blanket cynicism regarding French colonialism stakes out no political position at all. It's just a solid, fairly icky slow-burn spy movie.
This turned out to be a great film to get my mojo back after the demoralizing experience of watching the latest Ant-Man. Screen legend Jean-Paul Belmondo stars as a French secret agent whose self-professed expertise is "espionage and punches"—and he's damn right. After Belmondo's spy is given up and left for dead by his superiors, he returns to Paris with revenge on his mind. This has a similar feel to some of those Bond adventures where 007 goes rogue a la "Licence to Kill," except for the fact that Belmondo is more of a sly fox who never really gets worked up about anything, even when the bullets start flying.
Belmondo's build in this flick is insane too: his almost gaunt, sad clown's face atop a barrel chest and Popeye arms. I'm making a note to hire a personal trainer to give me the Belmondo look when I turn 48.
Well, of course, Belmondo is super cool and he makes a great action hero but a ludicrous plot and a rehashed Morricone score stop this from being great.
Things to look out for include gratuitous female nudity, a very strange scene where a woman is threatened with lesbian activity to try to make her talk, and a fantastic car chase through the streets of Paris including on the Place du Trocadéro (the plaza on the other side of the Seine from the Eiffel Tower where you can take great scenic photos) and up and down the stairs around it.
Enjoyable but a bit silly.
