Sometimes you have to make a Mr. Woodcock before you can make an I, Tonya.
A film so bad that even its director and two leads hate it, Mr. Woodcock is a painfully uninspired and unfunny comedy chock-full of tired performances and predictable, needlessly mean-spirited gags.
The main focus of the film, Mr. Woodcock is a lot like J.K. Simmons' character in Whiplash. Abusive, aggressive, and overall evil in pursuit of the end goal of making people tougher or better at their craft. But while Whiplash pretty clearly villifies J.K. Simmons, the end result of Mr. Woodcock is agreeing with his testament, and that was in shockingly bad taste.
If it was just a terrible ending I could get over it. But the whole film has terrible characters and terrible writing. It is obnoxious at most points and terribly boring at others. One of the most aggressively unfunny films I have ever seen.
Such a funny movie Billy Bob Thorton has never failed a movie not one bit. Would you like him as a Gym Teacher? Billy has a very unique sense of sarcasm I gave the movie 10/10 then again I could not stop laughing when I saw the movie 🏀 now take a lap!
Stifler, best known for having other men lust over his mother, is now transplanted into a narrative in which he must wrestle (literally) a complex father-figure to convince him to continue bedding his mother. The movie pulls most of its humour from references to Mr. Woodcock’s prodigious equipment and how much satisfaction it brings Stifler’s mom. His romantic interest is sidelined to such a degree that, structurally, the movie unfolds like a metafictional Oedipal rom-com. You’d be forgiven for writing Mr. Woodcock off as one of many bad mid-aughts comedies, but it seems like there’s maybe something deeper and weirder going on here too? (Still not fun to watch.)
Mr. Woodcock is a potential career-destroying and unfunny "comedy" about one of those awful self-help authors who returns to his home town to find that his hated gym teacher is now dating his mother.
Seann William Scott is the author (why the fuck not?) and Billy Bob is the gym teacher (I've always thought Bob would make a great gym teacher.. obviously) whereas the mother is played by Susan Sarandon (She plays a lot of these roles it seems) so yeah.. it's basically these three being shitty for 90 minutes.

This shit is crass, obnoxious, extremely inappropriate (e.g., Mr. Woodcock's abusive antics), and the type of comedy that usually isn't my cup of tea whatsoever. But, for whatever reason, Billy Bob Thornton as Mr. Woodcock is so damn funny to me.
The humor is hit and miss (though more hit than miss for me). Still, Mr. Woodcock as a deadpan, insensitive, sardonic asshole simply tickles me. If the Woodcock character doesn't work for you, you'll likely hate this movie. The actual movie itself is mediocre at best.
This is one of the more puzzling films I've seen. I'm honestly not sure what I was supposed to get out of it. Laughter? Quite frankly it's too dark for that. This is one of those lopsided rivalry "comedies" where a guy tries and repeatedly fails to get revenge on some alpha male stereotype who caused him harm in the past. The only difference here being that the untouchable jerkwad is the protagonist's old gym teacher, who used to beat the crap out of him back when he was a kid. It's hard to find any amusement in a dynamic like that.
