A horrid crime was committed at a wedding reception and bridesmaid Chi Ching was the lone eyewitness. At the police station, she recognised the suspect, Suen Ling, in a line up. I can always appreciate a distinct take on love and loyalty, and Koma certainly delivers on that!

Do you like twists? What about...one every five minutes or so? Award winning actresses Karena Lam and Angelica Lee star in Law's tremendously stupid, and extremely entertaining thriller.
The story is completely bananas, but Lee and Lam are great actresses who elevate this kind of thing, and director Law gives everything a classy sheen. If you thought something like Final Analysis was great fun, this might be the thing for you.
I'm kind of obsessed with the opening theme + credits sequence!! Also I am an absolute sucker for early 2000s horror aesthetics and frenemy storylines so I def enjoyed this

This is about two women--one of them likes to steal kidneys, and the other one needs a kidney, and they both sleep with the same guy, and then one of them kills two guys, and then the first one tries to steal the (nonfunctioning) kidneys of the other one, and then she dies somehow, and gives the second one her kidney?
The Chinese title for this translates to "Help", but somebody decided to call it "Koma". The only character in this who's in a coma is the kidney thief woman's mom, and you only see that mom 10 minutes into the film, so you can see how much of this movie somebody in the states watched before deciding what to name it.
There is a soft spot in my soul for a well done movie about illegal organ harvesting. The thieves always come for people when they are at their most blackout drunk which strikes a little too close to home for me.
Koma is shot with the fluffy edges of a Lifetime movie, sharing their curious emotional moments and silly jump scares. It then recuses the mom-feels as an omnipresent threat makes itself known via vomiting chloroformed cuties waking up in ice baths. Suddenly the forces of Forest Gump-styled plot crescendos produce a whirlwind wherein every other person in the movie is tearfully losing a kidney.
I became so enamored with Koma that I kicked my heels into the air with laughter…

the plot of this has so many twists and genre elements i honestly respect how they really just went for it trying to balance a body horror organ trafficking plot, a love triangle, and a strange love-hate friendship between the two leads that you want to see thrive but know is likely doomed. also has an unexpectedly sweet ending. 🖤

Inspired by one of the greatest urban legends ever, the screenplay by Susan Chan Suk-Yin is well constructed and gives talented director Law Chi-Leung many opportunities to thrill the viewer. This movie is genuinely creepy and strangely voyeuristic.
Director Law trains his camera eye on the ladies shoes to help establish character. Action direction by Stephen Tung Wai works seamlessly to blend fright elements and police action scenes to heighten overall effect.
Two terrific performances by Angelica Lee Sin-Je and Karena Lam Ka-Yan make Koma an exceptionally compelling and entertaining cinematic experience. Supporting player Raymond Wong Ho-Yin supplies yet another deliciously bizarre performance that will put a smile on the face of any horror genre enthusiast.
A strangely unsettling film from director Lo Chi-leung and starring two of the biggest young actresses on the scene at the turn of the century. Lo had a fine little run going on at the time - Viva Erotica, Double Tap and Inner Senses leading up to this film. The two actresses are Karena Lam (July Rhapsody, Inner Senses, Floating Landscape) and Angelica Lee (Princess D, The Eye, 20:30:40) and they go head to head like rams with their horns locked. Inner Senses and The Eye were perhaps the two best Hong Kong horror films at the time, so it feels only right that they are put together.
