There's clear bugetary restrictions in this drag reworking of Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), although they do a lot with a little and the overall effect works to create a dreamlike atmosphere that serves the film well. Compared to Vegas In Space (1991) this looks a million bucks.
That aside, HUSC is a mix of camp comedy and drama that might benefit from being more of one of those styles. There's an issue with pacing, in the middle part of the film particularly, where the melodrama drags (ahem...), but this resolves in the later portion.
It's interesting seeing Varla Jean Merman as the evil role, it's a strong performance and a world away from her innocent character in Girls Will…
