Jacek, an angry drifter, murders a taxi driver, brutally and without motive. An extraordinary bold and unquestionable important cinematic political statement, only solidifying my opinion that A Short Film About Killing (which I happened to see first) is one of the very greatest films ever made.
This episodes theme is Thou Shalt Not Murder!
I have seen the expanded feature titled A Short Film About Killing and it knocked my socks off! I gave it 5 Stars! This is the shorter version for the mini series and is equally as good! But if you get a chance do make a point of viewing the expanded version!
The film basically looks at both sides of the coin and shows us how senseless murder and senseless capital punishment are one in the same.. Pointless! And Wrong!

Kieslowski explores the bitter irony of the capital punishment system with a brutal, no-holds-barred display of the insurmountable expenses, human and otherwise. One that spurred such a wake-up call in its wake for those in its native Poland that it ignited the necessary country-wide conversation on the value of such a practice in our society.

I watched A Short Film About Killing first and there is no doubt that this is one of the best episodes of the series so far. The cinematography continues to be top-notch and this time the score is out of this world as well. Kieślowski raises moral questions in an episode that is all about the our choices, the consequences of those choices, society's perception of those choices, and how fragile life can be - with a dash of political debate.

I always prefer Director Krzysztof Kieślowski's more stylistic films, which was the main reason I adored every moment of Dekalog Part 5. Currently I would say part 5 and 1 are my favorite chapters of this masterful mini-series. Kieślowski wrote and directed the entire series, but he used different cinematographers for each episode to help to give each of them a different aesthetic. I was not surprised at all to see the Cinematographer was Slawomir Idziak who also worked on Kieślowski's 'Three Colors: Blue', which was my favorite film from that trilogy because of how stylistic and visually rich it was.

The senseless brutality of man exists not only in the incomprehensibly evil actions of the individual, but also the procedural sentences carried out by the “justice” system. The way this episode is written, shot, colored, and edited is all near perfect, and (without giving any spoilers away) the way the final scene is shot and choreographed is devastatingly poignant. Finally I just want to add I think this episode should be viewed as a masterclass in building empathy for a character. So far this is my favorite episode from Dekalog.

Best Criterion purchase ever.
Kieślowski takes on the death penalty and wins. This film is absolutely beautiful. Not only is this the prettiest one so far, with immaculate lighting and use of color but the story is powerful and enthralling. Mirosław Baka is haunting as Jacek, a character that perfectly tests the boundaries and context of the commandment being focused on.
I absolutely loved this.

DEKALOG PART 5:
You know first part was a definite hit for me, but this one literally bombed, makes the level of whole DEKALOG series too high so that no series from any timeline in Earth mayn't compete with it ig. DEKALOG 5 is my favourite episode among all of these 10. And this is the one which i rewatched exactly after finishing my first watch within no time, perhaps i will watch "A SHORT FILM ABOUT KILLING" an extended version film of this part..that would be more better! Btw as like always it also follows a basic commandment which says:
"Thou Shalt not kill"

Dekalog part five focuses on the commandment Thou Shalt not Kill and begins by introducing us to the three main players in the story; murderer, victim and the idealistic attorney opposed to capital punishment. The showing of these separate stands really speaks to the inevitability of the unfolding events as we bear witness to a senseless murder and then the response courtesy of the state. It's an unflinching look at crime and punishment with everything presented wholeheartedly. The film really analyses the core of the commandment by drawing parallels between the two murders; questioning how capital punishment can be deemed correct when God gives no man the right to murder (no matter how much a criminal seems to deserve it),…
