Funny, touching, still as good as it was when I watched it in the theater with a young lady I would later marry. Our first movie date. Yes, she still married me even though I laughed way too hard and loud in the theater. And she's still married to me even though I still laugh too hard and loud sometimes.
Bill Crystal spends approximately 50% of the movie riding a horse while wearing a New York Mets hat.
If that doesn’t sell you, its still a classic fish out of water story combined with the “what is my purpose in life” story that is surprisingly poignant but also consistently funny because Billy Crystal is a comedic god.
Giddy-up buckaroos ... its time to kick that mid-life crisis to the curb cowboy style!
"One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and the rest don't mean shit ... But, what is the one thing? ... That's what *you* have to find out."
After seeing City Slickers 2 a bunch of times as a kid, I finally checked out what this Curly fella was all about. By just glancing at the movie poster you pretty much know what you are in for, as we follow a group of friends from New York who try to find some adventure by taking part in a real western cattle drive. I was just expecting a Billy Crystal western comedy, but I…
For a film that is deliberately set up for audiences to call it dumb or useless, there’s actually a heartwarming nature and intelligence within City Slickers. It’s a roaring, exciting and feel-good 90s comedy that doesn’t want you to do anything except enjoy yourself. With pacing that’s both expeditious and self-aware, the film never takes itself seriously enough for the humor to fall flat. All these men deliver competent performances that both entertain you and work as plot devices, even Jack Palance’s 12-minute Oscar-winning performance shines. All in all, there’s nothing apparently striking about it, but there doesn’t need to be.
This entire movie was just being shocked that people were in this. Lisa Simpson? The guy from Home Alone? Mr Mosby?! JAKE GYLLENHAAL?!?!?!
Better than it has any right to be, City Slickers is one of the most aggressively 7/10 movies I’ve ever seen. It’s consistently funny but not hilarious, sweet but not overly emotional, and clever but not genius. Everything about this movie is above average and more than adequate, but not much about it stands out. The cattle-driving premise provides downtime for the characters to have surprisingly heartfelt conversations, and also serves as an avenue for realistic action involving a bunch of average guys.
This movie rides on Billy Crystal’s likability — if you’re not a fan, this ain’t for you, but if you are, then it’s a pretty fun time.
“IF HATE WERE PEOPLE, I’D BE CHINA!”
POV: dad’s midlife crisis. Spoilers: you’re dad.
With its big heart, measured goofiness, and uptempo Western adventure beats, Ron Underwood's "City Slickers" is a robust comedy romp. Starring Billy Crystal as an adman looking for purpose, the film is thoroughly amusing, fully felt, and completely entertaining.
"City Slickers" focuses on Crystal's Mitch Robbins and his two pals as the trio heads to New Mexico to get out of New York City and find themselves as the three barrel toward middle age. Driving cattle allows the three men to hash out their domestic issues, deal with bullying cowboys, and figure out what is most important in their lives.
The comedy is spirited, but the narrative is smart enough to layer that comedy with solid emotion and an observation…
pretty funny, but like most movies could stand to be more like cabin boy. jack palance is in this like lugosi in bride of the monster! some beautiful cinematic vistas & parallels to tremors (ravine, etc) but even the legit stuntwork lacks the tactile/sensory element of that movie or other real westerns; good depiction of neurotic adult friendship tho (some of it reminded me of eddie & martin in boomerang) but with kind of a westworld/death wish/close encounters angle that isnt fully explored (+obv jaws). i had forgotten completely (5G-fog) how much trouble i got in at school singing "man my ass is swollen!" to the tune of rawhide like billy-- z'ers will never understand how 90s kids worshipped these coked-up shticky…
