Im Hintergrund der Berg, alles überschattend. Karg wie die Landschaft um ihn herum. Er wirkt ruhig, doch in seinem Inneren brodelt etwas. Ähnlich geht es auch den Figuren. Seynep findet bei ihren Eltern Unterschlupf, doch schnell brechen alte Konflikte wieder auf. Die kalte Wut die Seynep in sich trägt bringt den gesamten Haushalt zum brodeln bis es zu einem finalen Ausbruch kommt und alles in sich zusammenbricht.
Wichtige Themen werden angesprochen (Patriarchat, häusliche Gewalt, Vergewaltigung), was auch schon mal unangenehm zum Ansehen ist. Doch manche der Szenen bergen eine (ungewollte?) Komik in sich.…
This was such a mess. The amount of things that felt wrong with this film was overwhelming and I'm not sure where one could begin to remedy it.
The strange drawn-out tempo, distant shots and the overall plot structure made it nearly impossible to form any meaningful connection or relationship with the characters and, unfortunately, the treatment of the characters and their experiences with abuse (physical and emotional) felt incredibly gratuitous all throughout.
The way violence is presented in this film is disconcertingly disturbing and I would not recommend this to anyone with a history of abuse since the film seems to glorify and revel in the violence its characters are subject to. Given this lack of effort to humanise its protagonists, the result becomes a humourless film that has very little to say and which in turn heavily relies upon the shock value of extremely violent scenes to make up for actual character dynamics and development.
Acemi yönetmenlerin güvenli liman sandığı ancak hızla vazgeçilmesi gereken “yerli sinemada minimalizm” kodlarıyla üretilmiş, sahne içi timing’leri berbat, upuzun sahneleri anlamsız, oyuncu performansları araya verilmiş, 90 dakikada hiçbir şey anlatmamayı beceren çok ama çok kötü bir film. Biraz Duvara Karşı, biraz NBCizm, biraz da gurbetçilik… “Toksik mutsuz erkek çevresindeki kadınlara hayatı zindan ediyor” demenin en kötü yollarından biri bu film olabilir.
Excruciatingly slow tempo, little dialogue, lots of silence, long shots of random doors - im afraid Ararat has a bad case of festivalitis. Best moment in the film was hearing the guy sitting in front of me snore.

If this film is considered perspective by Berlinale programmers - maybe Deutch kino has no perspectives.
Cheap missen-scenes. Boring narrative. Functional characters.
If you like all the things that make films at festivals boring slow and repetitive you will love this film. Its attempts at being insightful and emotional fall flat due to the longest pauses in dialogue history.

Despite the belief "slow times = auteur cinema" and lowering the indulgence for a debut, the film wins in staging Turkish social and cultural repression on females, thanks to a girl with the potential explosive power of a quiescent volcano, which you know will bring trouble to everyone if it explodes. But the whole film is a boiling magma that you know will explode at any moment, even though the timing isn't managed very well.
