The plot of the film is the love of a married woman, Anna Karenina, and a young officer, Aleksei Vronsky. Anna leaves the family in search of happiness to her beloved person. She has to take a very serious step in her life - to part with her son. The attitude of the high society towards her is changing. All this brings a lot of pain and humiliation to the main character. The tragic story of love and betrayal, the fate of a woman, for the sake of passion who decided to change her life irrevocably.

I once read and loved Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, but it was so long ago that I remember only the same things everyone knows, even those who haven’t read it. As a result, I'm not in a position to judge the accuracy of Alexander Zarkhi's 1967 adaptation of the novel, nor any other attempt to bring it to screen. What I can say, however, is that Zarkhi's version, despite being badly hamstrung by its length ("only" 140 minutes), has to it an intensity that befits that of the novel, and is far more creatively stylish than I would have expected from the director of maybe my favorite straight propaganda film of the Soviet era.

What more can I say about the source material? Tolstoy is one of the two or three greatest artists who has ever lived in terms of depicting interpersonal relations and the ecology of human emotion - Zarkhi must have been cognizant that he has nothing to offer, tweak, or improve in this respect, and largely stays out of the way. There are instances where he allows himself some directorial indulgences, such as the early ballroom scene where Kitty is rejected, the moody "deathbed" confessional, and Anna's brief reunion with Seryozha, but fundamentalists will rest easy in the knowledge that iconic scenes such as the ice skating sequence, horse race, and Levin's proposal are perfectly preserved.
What I admire the most about Zarkhi's effort is his rendering of what I believe to be the two central themes of Anna Karenina, two aphorisms that are impossibly trite and nonetheless universally applicable - true, meaningful love is hard work, and actions have consequences.

wish anna karenina wasn't written by mr. dickhead tolstoy because if you take out his typical fuckery it could make so much better story. otherwise this is heartfelt adaptation with excellent cast and soundtrack. karenin here is no jude law you completely understand why anna ran away from him. interesting how lanovoy and samoylova played main couple after almost ten years since their divorce. i don't intend to watch any other adaptations since that's enough of tolstoy's shit for me and im firm believer that only russians are allowed to adapt russian classic literature.

The Kino disc for this is super annoying and probably did my experience no favors. The film seemingly has no subtitle options and only offers a dub that slips into subtitled scenes occasionally presumably because they were cut from the American presentation originally. It also treats the film so much as two parts it seems like the film is split over two discs when this isn't the case. I was tempted to rely on my knowledge of the story on this one, but ultimately opted for the dub which to be fair is very good.
That said even under more ideal conditions I doubt the film would move me beyond my general amused level of enjoyment of the picture. The…

Aleksandr Zarkhi directs a 145 minute drama starring Tatyana Samoylova, as we're all familiar with the story and author this film is based on, there's no need for a plot summary.
Maybe you've seen other versions of Anna Karenina, in my case its the 90s one by Bernard Rose, so what's your reason for watching this one?
Well to start the story has been brought to the screen in its original language here, so there's an added authenticity.

There are many things to like about this 1967 adaptation of Tolstoy's famous novel. I think the casting is terrific, the scenography and costume design exccellent and the direction solid.
The film is gorgeous in terms of image composition and stylistic direction, all though in my copy of the DVD, the film stock hasn't aged that well, which is a shame.
I think it's pretty clear that this film tries to mimic the sucess of WAR AND PEACE that came out a few years earlier to both comercial and critical success, winning an Oscar and every other film prize known to man.

There have been so many great film adaptations of this classic tale, all, to my knowledge, by British, American or French filmmakers. This is the first I have seen by Russians, in Russian, with Russian actors, and it therefore takes it to a whole other level. Tatyana Samoylova, ten years after The Cranes are Flying, has grown into this role, her raw emotion and vulnerability as Veronica matured into the poise and power of Anna. Greta, Vivian and Keira were all wonderful Annas, but I am sure Tatyana comes closest to the character Tolstoy created.

Für mich, der bisher alle gängigen Karenina Filme gesehen hat, ist die Verfilmung von Alexander Sarchi die bisher zweitbeste Adaption des Romans, knapp nach jener von 1948 (Regie: Julien Duvivier) mit Vivien Leigh als Anna. Besonders hervorzuheben sind in meinen Augen hier die exzellente Kameraarbeit nebst expressionistischem Schnitt und der fantastische Score von Rodion Schtschedrin.
