Malus sylvestris

Growing form

A shrub or a small, spiny tree. The crown is wide and low. The foliage consists of numerous small leaves.

Size

3–8 m high.

Stem

The twigs are spiny. The bole is crooked or even twisted. The annual shoots are thin, lustrous maroon and glabrate.

Leaf

The petiole is 1.5–3 cm long, about half the length of the lamina. The lamina is 3–8 cm long, simple, ovate, short-acuminate, serrate, glabrous or scant-pubescent beneath along the veins. The buds are glabrate.

Flower

The inflorescence is a two-to-six-flowered umbel. The pedicel and sepals are glabrous. The petals are 12–15 mm, white – pink and do not overlap each other. There are 15–20 stamens and 3–5 carpels in a flower. The ovary is inferior.

Fruit and seed

The apple is 1–2 cm, globose, long-stalked, green and bitter.
