Coronella austriaca, known as the smooth snake, is a small to medium-sized snake characterized by its smooth scaly skin with variable coloring, often in shades of brown or grey with darker stripes or spots along its back. This species is widespread throughout Europe to Western Asia, inhabiting a wide range of habitats from forested areas, through bushy meadows to gardens and cultivated lands, where it primarily feeds on small mammals, birds and their offspring, as well as reptiles and amphibians. The smooth snake is important for maintaining balance in ecosystems by controlling the populations of its prey. It is a non-venomous species, often mistakenly considered dangerous due to its appearance, although it is very shy towards humans and prefers to flee when encountered. Due to its inconspicuousness and ability to adapt to various environments, Coronella austriaca is often overlooked, yet its presence is a sign of a healthy and undisturbed natural environment.
