    'Japanese Gerbera'

    Asteraceae: A perennial growing to 20cm. Found in grassy hills and low mountains. Rosettes of serrated leaves and white daisy flowers with yellow centres in late summer to autumn, followed by attractive, fluffy seed heads. Native to the valleys, mountain slopes and summits of China, Japan, Korea, and Russia (Sakhalin and Siberia).

     

    USES:

    The young leaves can be cooked and eaten.

     

    GROWING INFORMATION:

    Seed sow spring in a greenhouse or cold frame. Only just cover the seed. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Succeeds in a well-drained soil in sun or part shade, doing well on a rock garden.
