Description

Rhizome (stem): decumbent to erect, with scales. Scales non-clathrate, bicolorous, medium brown with dark centers.

Fronds (leaves): usually 10-30 cm long , erect (may be arching).

Stipes (petioles): not winged , longer than the blade, dark brown to purplish-black/black, concolorous, with scales. Scales non-clathrate, bicolorous, medium brown with dark centers, sparse to dense, only at the extreme base.

Blades: pinnate-pinnatisect to bipinnate-pinnatisect, elliptic-triangular to elliptic, margins entire, may be undulate, revolute, glabrous.

Veins: obscure, free or partially anastomosed.

Pinnae: (2-)3-5 pairs , lanceolate/ovate, proximal pinnae not or minimally reduced in size, distance between first and second pinna pairs twice as long as the distance between third and fourth pinna pairs .

Ultimate segments: linear-oblong or oblong-lanceolate/ovate.

Rachises (midribs): not winged or only winged near apex , not grooved, dark brown to purplish-black/black, glabrous.

Sori: marginal coenosorus , paraphyses absent.

Indusia: false indusium, linear, opening toward midrib (inward).
