Schoenorchis gemmata has bloomed

gemmata092019.jpgI purchased this Schoenorchis gemmata from California Orchids at their open house in the Fall of 2018.  It has bloomed twice for me in that time (most frequently from June to September of 2019), with hundreds of small purple and white bloomes.  It is in a three-inch pot, hanging on a west wall of the greenhouse.  It gets daily misting, watering twice a week in the summer (less in the winter), and seems to like it.

It is a intermediate/cool growing plant, native to southeast asia.

Brassavola Verrucosa bloomed well this year.

IMG_5343 (1).jpgI purchased this Brassavola Verrucosa from the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate at their open house on Friday, July 14, 2017, and it bloomed once again in June this year.  It has been hanging on the north wall of my Solarium and doing well.  This year, it had four spikes, each with multiple flower buds, but the weight of the plant (with spikes) was too much for the wall mount, and it fell, breaking three of the four spikes.   This picture shows the flowers on the surviving spike.

A good plant.  It is mounted on cork without any media, and I water (mist) it daily when I am here — infrequently leaving for a weekend, or perhaps five days.  Looks to have six or seven new leads this year.

Odontioda (Cordata ‘Midas’ x nebulosum alba ‘Beckendorfs’) is in bloom

I purchased this Odontioda (Cordatum ‘Midas’ x nebulosum alba ‘Beckendorfs’) from eBay vendor letstalkplants on December 23, 2016.  It is a Rhynchostele hybrid, and a pretty one.  It has bloomed reliably for each of the past three years, with an increasing number of flowers and increasing flower size.

IMG_5460.jpgRynchostele cordata and Rynchostele aptera (Odontoglossum nebulosum)  are both native to Mexico, in oak pine forests at about 2000+ meters above sea level.  They grow in a cool environment, with temperatures between 45 degrees and 80 degrees in the summer and below 65 degrees in the winter.  They do not need a lot of light, but slightly increased light during the winter.  They need frequent water (every 2-3 days) in the summer and infrequent water (every 10-14 days) in the winter.

Rhynchostele Candidula deflask

Candidula013019.jpgI acquired a flask of Rhynchostele Candidula from Marni Turkel who sells as mostlyspecies on eBay.  There were about 40 plants or so, and I placed most of these into my Bonzai pots (I drilled many additional holes in the pots, as these seem to retain water, rather than drain it all off).  I filled two Bonzai pots, one three-inch pot with a single plant (which was double the size of the others), and one three-inch pot with the remainder.

Rhynchostele Candidula is known as the “white rhynchostele” and is native to the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero of Mexico.  It grows in humid mixed forest at 7,000 to 9,000 feet.  It is a cool grower, needing mostly shade.  In the winter, it takes increased light and less water.  Since the roots need to dry quickly, they do well mounted.

We’ll see how these go…

Odontioda (Quisto x Salway)

Quisto013019.jpgI acquired a back-bulb division of Odontioda (Quisto x Salway) from Bob Hamilton in the spring of 2018, and it has now bloomed.  Beautiful!

It is in a 3″ pot.  Two foot spike with seven flowers.

Odontoglossum Roy Wittwer

wittwer010719.jpgI acquired this Odontoglossum Roy Wittwer from Bob Hamilton in my visit to his greenhouse on December 9, 2018.  It has a tall spike, with 10 blooms.  The shape of the flower is interesting.  It’s ruffled.

We’ll see how this one evolves.

Vuylstekeara Happy Refrain ‘Sheila’ AM/AOS is in bloom

SHelia010719.jpgI purchased this Vuylstekeara Happy Refrain ‘Sheila’ AM/AOS from the Orchid Zone — in the last days of the Orchid Zone.  It had a little “scale” problem this past year (as did many of my plants in the solarium — and as did most of my Orchid Zone plants), but has recovered nicely, and is currently in bloom with two spikes, and a dozen blooms.

This plant was from the Tom Perlite bedding plants (Golden Gate Orchids), and I am glad to have it.

Odontioda Bradshawe is in bloom

Bradshawe010719.jpgI acquired this Odontioda Bradshawe from Bob Hamilton on my visit to his greenhouse on May 7, 2015.   This plant sat on the center table of my orchid room, shaded by two much-larger Odontiodas.  It never really took off.  But it was one of the first plants that I transferred into my new greenhouse, and it responded there very well.  It sits on the south side, on the upper shelf, with year-round 50% shade cloth on the south windows.

It is interesting to look at my original post for this plant.  The color on the flower is much better.

Oncidium Sweet Sugar ‘Lemon Drop’ is in bloom

SweetSugar010719.jpgI purchased this Oncidium Sweet Sugar ‘Lemon Drop’ from Brookside Orchids at Orchids in the Park in San Francisco on Saturday, July 22, 2017.  It did not bloom for me last year, as it was sitting on a lower shelf in the solarium.  It was one of the first plants that I transferred to the new greenhouse, and it has done well there.  It still is “climbing the tree”, as each pseudobulb seems to be about 1/2-inch higher than the previous one.

This adds some beautiful yellow color to the greenhouse.

Odontioda (Cochlioda Noezliana x Castle de Stro)

Noezliana010719.jpgI acquired this Odontioda (Noezliana x Castle De Stro) from Bob Hamilton on my visit to his greenhouse on December 9, 2018.  It is potted in a 3″ pot, and has a 24-inch spike with 10 blooms.  I note that Noezliana is a Cochlioda.
