Celebrating 40 Years of Caring for Families
Board of Trustees
Executive Director Lisa Suprenand
OFFICERS
RMHC Friends and Supporters: We are celebrating our 40th year in Tampa Bay! As I listen to the stories of our founders, I am reminded that our mission has remained the same throughout all these years, to support the health and wellbeing of children and their families at a time when they need it the most. By responding to the most basic needs of our families, we have helped pave a path for thousands of families while providing a framework that improves communication between doctors and parents. •
All children need access to the best doctors and treatment during medical crisis. The best health care may be miles away from home. Ronald McDonald House removes the financial and emotional burdens of being away from home. Eliminating these burdens allows families more equitable access to the best health care available.
•
Ronald McDonald House is a critical component in family-centered care, which takes a partnership approach to making the best decisions for a child between the family and doctors. Ronald McDonald House allows families to stay near the hospital and be in continuous contact with their child’s medical team, resulting in better health outcomes, and improved long-term results.
Edward Ameen, Chairman Kerry O’Reilly, President Wes Bean, Vice President Krista Garner, Treasurer Lauren Catoe, Secretary Pam Barber, Immediate Past President
Children face medical crisis with their best support team - their families, and by extension, Ronald McDonald House. I hope you enjoy this look back at our history and join us in celebrating another incredible 40 years ahead. Thank you for 40 years of positively impacting the health and well-being of over 50,000 children and families!
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Mission The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and wellbeing of children and their families.

Our History
RONALD McDONALD HOUSE Keeping families closeÂŽ Alex and Claudia Brolo left their home in Guatemala over 3 years ago in search of treatment for their daughter Nina that would help her heart condition. Since then, Nina has undergone heart surgery, and is receiving medication that will help her get strong enough to return home. In the meantime, this family has given up their entire lives in their home country in search of a better life for their child. Their son Italo was only four months old when they arrived, he has since taken his first steps at Ronald McDonald House, and recently celebrated his third birthday. While the Brolos are an extraordinary case, they share what all our families have in common: a desire to help their children and return home to a normal life. Ronald McDonald House offers a loving home to thousands of families each year during a time of incredible stress.
Celebrating 40 years of care & comfort to pediatric families. The Brolo family
1980 was a big year for St. Petersburg. Until then, there was no place for families to stay when their children were receiving treatment in the hospital. Our founders knocked on the door of a house across from the hospital and asked if they could purchase it to convert to a Ronald McDonald House. The St. Petersburg West Ronald McDonald House, located in Roser Park, was only the 17th Ronald McDonald House in the world (and the first of its kind in Florida) when it opened its doors to care for families with sick children in the spring of 1980. Since then, Ronald McDonald House Charities Tampa Bay (RMHCTB) has evolved from one house to four houses, caring for 2,000 families each year. In the past 40 years, RMHC-TB has comforted and cared for more than 50,000 families and is the only charity that meets this need in the Tampa Bay area.
longer stays and a quiet environment. Nearby, the 34-bedroom St. Petersburg East House is a beehive of activity on most days, with volunteer groups, dog therapy and meal volunteers creating a comforting and hospitable environment for the many families who stay there. The St. Petersburg Central House is located within the walls of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, providing 14 bedrooms for families with critical care children, and offering respite called Day Use (free snacks, showers, nap rooms, laundry facilities) to any family with a patient staying in the hospital. Families travel from all over the world to find specialty care for their children that is not available elsewhere. These families are anxious and stressed about their child, and they need the comfort and care that only RMHC can provide.
A legion of volunteers (400+) help us care for these families during their stay in our houses, while the community pitches in by making hot meals for resident families each night. No payment is required for families to stay, easing yet another burden from struggling parents’ shoulders. It truly is “the best place you never want to be.” RMHC-TB is a locally run 501c3, part of an incredible mission that has grown to a network of 375 houses in 45 countries and
regions. RMHC helps thousands of families around the globe, and we are thankful for the incredible community support we receive in Tampa Bay so that we can continue to make an impact on families when they need it most.
Three houses in St. Petersburg serve families with children receiving treatment at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and nearby clinics. The Tampa House serves families with children receiving treatment from Tampa General, St. Joseph’s Children’s and Shriners Hospitals. Between the four houses, 80 bedrooms are available each night for families who must drive more than an hour to be near their child’s bedside. The St. Petersburg West House still operates as an 18-bedroom home in the Roser Park historic district, caring for bone marrow transplant families who require specialty accommodations, as well as families requiring

SOUTH AFRICAN FAMILY FINDS COMFORT AND SUPPORT AT RMHC. by Alison Barrick & Joe Harless

Family
16-year-old surfer Max Giannikos had great expectations for his first visit to the United States. His mom Roxanne, sister Alexia and her husband Tyrone, and youngest sister Staszi had decided to visit family in New York before driving down the coast to Florida. This trip was planned as a healing adventure for the family, who had just endured the traumatic loss of Alexia and Tyrone’s two-year-old daughter Olivia, from brain cancer. They wanted to get away, see some new sights and get a fresh perspective. Max couldn’t wait to try his luck with the waves in Daytona Beach before continuing their journey to Clearwater Beach. And that’s where the trip of a lifetime came to a dramatic halt.
After settling into their hotel, Max, Alexia and Tyrone went out for beach day supplies. On their way to the store, Max was hit by a car in the crosswalk. Alexia and Tyrone watched in horror as the teen was thrown 25 feet in the air before landing in a pile on the pavement, critically-injured. Since the accident location was under a bridge, the medical helicopter was unable to land, further delaying Max’s treatment. Once help arrived, Alexia insisted on riding in the vehicle with her brother while Tyrone waited behind for Roxanne and Staszi. A flat tire on the way to the hospital delayed the ambulance trip, but finally, Max arrived at Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg. Normally, children are taken directly to the hospital next door,

CRITICALLY-INJURED TEENAGER FINDS BLESSINGS AMIDST THE PAIN
I found myself chatting with God but since Max is six feet tall and looks older than his 16 years, the attendants took him straight to the adult hospital. Meanwhile, Roxanne and Staszi were waiting at the hotel for the kids to return, wondering what was taking so long. Roxanne felt that something was wrong, and as she walked outside the hotel, she heard the sirens and instinctively began running toward them. Her mother’s intuition told her that one of her babies was hurt. Tyrone met her at the scene and filled her in. When the family arrived at the hospital, they learned that Max had extensive injuries requiring immediate surgery. As the family huddled together in the hospital waiting room, the surgeons attempted to reduce the swelling on Max’s brain, while also dealing with his other critical injuries. In addition to brain swelling, Max suffered a cervical fracture, three broken vertebrae in his back, two broken ribs, a shattered leg and elbow, and broken facial bones. Roxanne, Alexia, Tyrone and Staszi stayed bedside with Max and watched in horror while he underwent one surgery after another. Max was in a coma and on life support for two long weeks, as stress piled up on the family. Alexia and Tyrone initially returned to the hotel in Clearwater but found themselves too frightened to cross the street. Finally, a social worker mentioned to Roxanne that a Ronald McDonald House (RMHC) was nearby and encouraged her to see if a room was available. The family knew of RMHC from their time spent with two-year-old Olivia when she battled cancer in South Africa, but they didn’t know what to expect in the U.S.
Someone in a coma is unconscious and will not respond to voices or other sounds. The person is still alive, but the brain is functioning at its lowest stage of alertness.
The next day, while Roxanne stayed bedside with Max, Alexia and Tyrone took Staszi to check into Ronald McDonald House. Since Staszi has Downs Syndrome, she needs additional care, and Roxanne is always concerned about how her daughter will handle new situations. Thankfully, Staszi made herself at home in the large house full of families and children. She enjoys all the toys, games and activities at the house, which greatly helps her mother cope. Roxanne says, “Everyone is so kind, there’s no pressure here, and it’s nice to be in a safe environment.” She continues, “It’s so nice to walk in the house and smell normal smells.
Having a place to stay and take a bath has taken 70% of my stress away.”
While Max was in a coma, he says that he went to heaven. “My niece Olivia was there, and she was so happy to see me! She ran up to me and embraced me, singing me songs just like she always did at home.” He continues, “I talked to God. He was a chill dude, and we had a good conversation. He told me that I needed to go back, but Olivia pouted because she wanted me to stay.” Olivia’s mom, Alexia, finds great comfort in knowing that her daughter is in a much happier place, and that Max was able to see her. She says, “This is
on a whole different level, I can’t express what this means to me.”
After just one month, Max was on his feet walking, although with a limp and assistance from others. He is determined to stay out of a wheelchair,
preferring to be independent and walking between rooms. He’s undergone seven surgeries in a short period of time, but his athletic young body has helped him rebound much faster than expected. It hasn’t been easy though. Max had to relearn how to swallow and speak because he was intubated for so long. The hospital staff were another source of comfort for the family. They all took great interest in this young patient and were eager to see him hit his milestones. Many of them came on their day off for his second extubation, since it was a critical step in his recovery and he had failed on the first try. Everyone was happy to see him succeed and have followed his progress closely. Max is taking physical therapy, occupational therapy and cognitive therapy. His shortterm memory is blank but is gradually returning as the weeks turn into months. Meanwhile, the family has made themselves comfortable at Ronald McDonald House, even though there are five of them sharing just one room. They prefer it that way and would rather not be separated as the RMHC staff have suggested to make them more comfortable. Roxanne enthuses, “RMHC
has exceeded every expectation, the staff are so caring, like angels.”
Her family expects to stay in the U.S. for several months while Max continues to progress with his therapy. He is a fighter, and he fully expects to be 99% recovered within the next two years. “We don’t
know what we would have done without RMHC.” O NE T E A M O N E D REAM / 9

For the past 8 years, Alan Brown has spearheaded the Hook, Line and Sinker Fishing Tournament almost singlehandedly to raise operational funds for Ronald McDonald House. Alan spends the entire year leading up to the tournament making phone calls, securing vendors, logistics, fishing boats and acquiring sponsorships for this annual event. He relies on the support of Southwest Airlines vendors and employees to make this tournament a big success. Even as his tournament has grown, raising more funds every year, it’s still just Alan and a few friends at the helm of this wonderful ship. He does all the work with little fanfare, relying on his connections to make the tournament happen each spring. We couldn’t be more grateful for our friendship with Alan Brown and the entire SWA team!

10 years ago, we opened our 4th house inside the new Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. Since then, this 14-bedroom house has provided the sense of security and comfort that only a house within the walls of the hospital can provide. Since opening in 2010, this house has cared for families whose children are the most critically-ill, while also providing daily respite to all families in the hospital through our Day-Use program. It is also home-base for our Meals On the Go program which provides bagged lunches for families staying bedside.
