It is abundantly growing in this region. Its health benefits are as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antimicrobial agent. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, which contribute to health problems such as cancer and heart disease, and the aging process.
Some use sumac to treat digestive, reproductive, respiratory and bladder related ailments; sore throat,colds; asthma and TB; vomiting; diarrhoea; injuries; stomachaches, ulcers, boils, blisters and rashes, etc. and as a laxative, diuretic, expectorant, liver aid; mouthwash; as eye, ear and heart medicine; as a wash for STDs.
A decoction of sumac flowers is also used to treat gas, indigestion, and other digestive upsets.
The inner bark was also used to treat hemorrhoids/ piles.
Early pioneers used the berries to reduce fevers; they steeped and strained the berries and thickened it with honey to yield a soothing cough syrup.
Some make wine from the berries.
It is a popular condiment/seasoning used as a souring agent or as a decorative garnish at the table. The reddish-purple sumac spice power is used to marinate meat, garnish hummus and salad. Mixed with freshly cut onion, it is served as an appetizer.
Soak fresh berries in water or pound entire berry heads in the water, extract their ruby juices.
