Medicago Sativa (Alfalfa) is a perennial plant from the Fabaceae family. The common name Alfalfa is a Spanish modification of Arabic-Persian origin meaning horse food. The plant is distributed and cultivated all around the world and used as livestock fodder.

Rich in galactomannans, Medicago Sativa extract leaves a retinoid-like action on the mature skin, exhibiting potent anti-aging properties without irritation or other adverse effects. Its behavior is similar to that of retinol towards dermal cells, Alfalfa extract stimulates dermal metabolism and efficiently fights against wrinkles.

Medicago Sativa Extract boosts the production of collagen type 1 and inhibits MMP-1 activity responsible for the destruction of ECM extracellular matrix components including structural and functional proteins (collagen and elastin). So, it acts as a retinol-like active ingredient and participates in the maintenance of extracellular matrix function.

In vivo tests proved that it significantly stimulates the synthesis of collagen I and inhibits metalloproteinases responsible for its degradation. Alfalfa extract improves the general appearance of mature skin and presents high anti-wrinkle properties. In comparison with the placebo, significant wrinkles deduction was observed after 28 days of treatment with a preparation containing Medicago Sativa Extract.
