Medicago Sativa (Alfalfa) is a perennial plant from the Fabaceae family. The common name Alfalfa is a Spanish modification of Arabic-Persian origin meaning horse food. The plant is distributed and cultivated all around the world and used as livestock fodder.
Rich in galactomannans, Medicago Sativa extract leaves a retinoid-like action on the mature skin, exhibiting potent anti-aging properties without irritation or other adverse effects. Medicago Sativa Extract boosts the production of collagen type 1 and inhibits MMP-1 activity responsible for the destruction of ECM extracellular matrix components including structural and functional proteins (collagen and elastin). In vivo tests proved that it significantly stimulates the synthesis of collagen I and inhibits metalloproteinases responsible for its degradation. Alfalfa extract improves the general appearance of mature skin and presents high anti-wrinkle properties.
