Equisetum hyemale can be found along the edges of rivers and in low-lying wet areas throughout North America and parts of South America. It can grow in up to 4 inches of water. Horsetail’s upright form and unique jointed stems are perfect for sites with modern architecture or sleek designs. It is also prized in fresh or dried flower arrangements. In the landscape, Horsetail creeps by rhizomes and will colonize quickly if left unchecked; if planted in a home landscape, it is best to contain it with barriers to minimize this spreading characteristic. It is an ancient plant that is believed to be approximately 350 million years old. Equisetum hyemale was used by native people as a scouring brush because of its high silica content and rough-textured bristles, hence its alternate common name, Scouring Rush.
