Tell Me More...
We are delighted to be among the first to bring Stachys officinalis 'Summer Grapes' to the UK, a new American-bred version of a classic British native wildflower (also known as betony). Borne on taller than usual stems, the flowers are also longer and paler than the species. As a member of the mint family, 'Summer Grapes' has the characteristic aromatic, wrinkled foliage which makes attractive, deer-resistant groundcover. Its flower stems are strong, straight, and leafless, making them ideal for flower arrangements. The flowers themselves are a magnet to pollinators, likely to hum with life during their blooming period of June to July. Use 'Summer Grapes' towards the front or middle of a border or along a path edge, where given moist, sunny conditions it will gently spread. It is also well-suited to growing in a container. For best results grow in well-draining, moderately fertile soil in full sun to partial shade. H: 75cm S: 55cm. Stachys officinalis is as hardy as it gets, able to withstand temperatures of -20 C and beyond. We are also introducing two other members of this range, 'Summer Sweets' and 'Summer Crush'. To buy all three, check out our Stachys officinalis Summer Collection.
