Koonin Goes Deep Twice In 15-11 Win At VCU

March 17, 2024 | Baseball

Jake Koonin mashed two home runs and drove in six runs in Princeton's 15-11 victory over VCU in their final matchup of a four-game series.

Koonin got the Tigers on the board with a two run double in the first inning, followed by a Caden Shapiro single that drove in two more in the second. VCU answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 4-3.

Koonin smacked his first of two home runs in the third, but the Rams would tack on three more runs and take the lead, 6-5. Jay Mentink recorded an RBI single in the fifth to tie the game, but VCU would tally five more runs, including a Casey Kleinman grand slam, in the bottom of the fifth.

Facing a 11-5 deficit, head coach Scott Bradley's group responded with five runs of their own in the sixth. Shapiro hit a sacrifice fly, Koonin added another two run double and Mentink singled to bring in two more.

Koonan delivered once again for the Tigers in the eighth, hitting his second dinger of the game to give the Tigers a 12-11 lead. Princeton would not look back after that, adding three insurance runs in the top of the ninth.

Jacob Faulkner pitched four scoreless innings to close the game, allowing one hit and fanning three to earn the win.

The Tigers return to Clarke Field for a double-header against Cornell on Saturday.
