Nutmeg Hickory is native to an area in coastal South Carolina, a bigger area in some of Louisiana and around there, and an area in eastern Mexico. Its leaves are 7 to 14 inches long with hairy stems and 7 to 9 narrow leaflets that are dark green above and silvery-hairy below. The bony nuts have a very thin 4-winged husk, covered by yellowish, hairs and it spits nearly to the base when ripe. The tree's bark is scaly and reddish-brown.
