Bison softball plays first away games of the season

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - It was a different view for the Gallaudet University softball team on Saturday afternoon as the Bison ventured away from their home field to travel north to face Penn College in a United East - Volt Division doubleheader.

The Bison were swept by the Wildcats, 8-0 in six innings the first game and 9-2 in the second game.

Game 1: Penn College 8, Gallaudet 0 (F/6)
GU had a hard time solving Penn College pitcher Mackenzie Weaver (8-3), who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Sophomore Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) had the honor of breaking up the no-hit bid with a single to right-center field with one out in the sixth. Weaver finished the complete game with 10 strikeouts and only one walk in six innings.

Penn College jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and added two more runs in the second as GU committed two errors in the field in each inning and the Wildcats only recorded one hit in each frame.

The Wildcats tacked on one run in the third and led 7-0. The game came to a close in the bottom of the sixth when Jesse Brumbaugh singled to right field to bring home Madison Herriman for the eighth run to end the game by the mercy rule.

Drolsbaugh started the game in the circle but only lasted until the second inning as Penn College scored six runs (one earned) off the righty on two hits, four walks and three strikeouts. Fellow sophomore Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) relived Drolsbaugh (2-6) and pitched four innings where she allowed two runs on four hits and two walks.

Game 2: Penn College 9, Gallaudet 2
The second game started like the first as the Wildcats plated four runs in the first with three coming off the bat of Weaver, who hit a three-run home run to left field off Elsbury (2-6) who got the start in the circle.

The Wildcats led 5-0 heading into the third when the Bison offense came alive against Fayth Anderson.

Elsbury (2-for-3) doubled to center field to bring home first year Carly Ortega (Loganville, Ga.), who reached by getting hit by a pitch from Anderson. That was GU's first run but not its last. First year Andi Sisemore (Arlington, Texas) followed with a RBI single to center as Elsbury raced home to cut the Wildcats lead to three, 5-2.

Penn College scored four additional runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 9-2.

Anderson (5-1) finished the seven-inning complete game with 13 strikeouts and one walks as GU scored two runs on four hits and one hit batter. Elsbury (2-6) surrendered nine runs (seven earned) on 13 hits, one walk and one strikeout.
