Bursera bipinnata – Copal Blanco Resin

In the ancient Mesoamerican worldview, Copal Blanco held significant spiritual importance, particularly among the Aztecs and indigenous peoples of Mexico. This resin was utilized as a purification tool through ceremonial fumigation, where it was placed on a brazier. The resulting fumes, clear and potent due to its abundant waxes, were believed to invoke the spirit of Quetzalcoatl, the revered feathered serpent deity associated with knowledge and wind in the Aztec pantheon.

Apart from its ceremonial use, Copal Blanco was also valued for its purported ability to modulate the nervous system, inducing relaxation and stimulating the production of endorphins. Traditionally, it was employed during the celebration of the dead and as a spiritual aid for introspection and healing journeys.

With its analgesic, antispasmodic, and expectorant properties, Copal Blanco’s significance transcends its mystical associations, rooted deeply in Mesoamerican culture and ceremony.

Copal Blanco requires meticulous attention from June to August. After harvesting, it undergoes a month-long drying process before being made available, often coinciding with the festivities of the Day of the Dead.

Characterized by its balsamic, turpentine-like aroma with peppery and spicy undertones, Copal Blanco melts entirely on charcoal. Care must be taken not to exceed the quantity to prevent extinguishing the coal, requiring patience to allow the smoke to dissipate before adding more resin.

We offer this precious resin with complete traceability, supporting indigenous cultures while prioritizing environmental conservation by ensuring sustainable harvesting practices.

How to Burn Copal Blanco Resin:

Light the charcoal with matches or lighter for about 20 seconds until it self-ignites. Use tongs to hold it up (never hold it with your fingers alone or you might get burned). Place the lit charcoal in a bowl or any incense burner. The bowl or incense burner should be filled with sand or dirt.  Let the charcoal warm for a few minutes. (It turns gray around the edges when it is ready)  Now you are ready! Add a small amount of Copal Blanco resin on top of the charcoal. The Copal Blanco resin will burn and soon release essential, aromatic oils through the smoke. Continue to place resins or powder on charcoal as they burn out and smoke decreases for a continuous burn.
