wild buckwheats

genus Eriogonum

Member of knotweed family (family Polygonaceae)
dicots (class Magnoliopsida)
flowering plants (subphylum Angiospermae)

There are no other wild species of this genus in the bay area.
Caution: The key to distinguish these species is not complete.

I’ve done the best with this key that I have the patience for, but it still depends on “annual” vs. “perennial” for herbs.

Key features:

perennial
no flower stipe
inflorescence bracts generally 3

inflorescence branched
flowers are clustered or individual
multiple individual flowers may grow from the same node, but not in a cluster
