More unusually coloured flowers

Post by ralphrmartin »

Three more plants with unusual coloured flowers.

The least unusual is Aylostera haagei v. orurensis. The petals fade to a paler shade towards the centre in an attractive way. When I was a kid, my Dad had the Lamb's Pocket Encyclopedia of Cacti in Color which illustrated this plant. Someone had maxed out the colour making it look red / yellow, so I really wanted to get this plant. The reality is rather different - much more subtle shades, but still a good colour.

The second is Aylostera einsteinii v. gonjianii RH1310/2, with yellow/orange flowers, and purple outer petals. While this colour combination is not so uncommon in Sulcorebutias, it is very unusual in an Aylostera.

The last one is a Lobivia hybrid: arachnacntha v. torrecillasensis x calorubra, having a good red flower with what can only be described as brass-coloured outer petals - they really do look metallic in the sun.

Cellphone now covered with drool
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs. Recently discovered gorgeous Gasteria.

Love the einsteinii. I have seedlings of einsteinii tilcarensis J192a which was sold with a photo with similar edged flowers bit in red (https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/AwkAAOSw ... s-l400.jpg)

Will have to see if they are like that when they flower!

I have several clones of A. euanthema v. tilcarensis, and they all have cracking flowers. Some are red, and one is pink. It's one of my favourite plants. A. einsteinii v. gonjianii 'lanata' WR751 is basically the same again, with orange flowers. Your J192a looks like another good form. Put my name on one of your spare seedlings, please!

I rather liked the purple-ish hue on the flowers of the krainziana on the right (compared to the standard red one on the left). The picture doesn't quite capture the lighter throat of the flowers.

Beautiful plants Ralph.
Here is one of my favourites, Aylostera (Mediolobivia) rovidana WR333b. The petals are not always as well marked as on this one, sometimes only a little pink / red. Unfortunately all 3 of my plants are still single bodied.

Paul, Ralph and Astro, have you tried pollinating these and seeing if the traits are passed to the progeny? (I'd happily sow seed from all of these if you can produce it but have the time or inclination to grow from it!)
