Yellow-crowned Parakeet (Cyanoramphus auriceps) 3 January 2017. Rakiura NP-Ulva Island, Southland District, NZ

Note bill color. The genus Cyanoramphus means "dark blue bill" which is appropriate. This New Zealand endemic is similar to the critically endangered Orange-fronted Parakeet (Cyanoramphus malherbi), but the Yellow-crowned Parakeet is brighter green with red, not orange forehead. This attractive species was formerly common, particularly in tall forests, but numbers have declined precipitously because of predation by introduced predators. IUCN lists this species as "near threatened." We only saw them here on Ulva Island where predators have been eliminated. HBW and H&M4 call this species the Yellow-fronted Parakeet.
