Magnolia virginiana, also known as the sweetbay magnolia, is a stunning deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States. It typically grows to a height of 20 to 40 feet (6 to 12 meters), though in optimal conditions, it can reach up to 60 feet (18 meters) tall. The tree has a pyramidal to conical shape when young, gradually becoming more rounded with age.

The leaves of Magnolia virginiana are elliptical to oblong in shape, with smooth edges and a glossy green surface. What's distinctive about these leaves is their silver-white undersides, which create an attractive contrast when the wind rustles through the branches.

In late spring to early summer, Magnolia virginiana produces fragrant, creamy-white flowers that are 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 centimeters) in diameter. These flowers have a subtle lemon scent and feature numerous petal-like tepals arranged in a cup-shaped form. The blooms attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, adding to the tree's appeal.

After flowering, Magnolia virginiana develops cone-like fruits that contain small red seeds. These fruits add visual interest to the tree and are a food source for various birds and wildlife.

Magnolia virginiana is adaptable to a range of soil types but prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soils. It can tolerate both full sun and partial shade, making it suitable for a variety of landscape settings, including woodland gardens, wetland margins, and residential yards. Hardy in zones 5-10.
