Storytelling is not something that I take for granted. Though it is predominantly seen as a form of entertainment, this process has shown me that it is a universal medium that holds an extreme amount of power. Whether it be correcting misrepresentations or unveiling stories that can provide security by normalizing just one aspect of daily life, it is a system that is difficult to satisfy but is rewarding. I’ve been extremely fortunate to have a team of people who are committed to telling this story with respect as well as our collaborators who devoted their time and voice to spark change. Our collaborators are the reason that change is happening, and we as a team were very fortunate to be able to capture it for a moment. – Meg Martin
What does it mean to tell a story? What does it mean to tell a story that isn’t yours? That doesn’t quite exist to me. Every story is our story and here in lies the true beauty of documentary making. Whether the story takes place on a different continent or the main characters are of a different identity to you, that is not the point. The point is that we are one with each other. We are one with the Earth and so when you tell a story and when we listen to stories, we should be empowered to use the stories to inform how we live our daily lives. The story we tell of the women of Siaya connects women all across the globe.
I am honoured to have been able to be a part of telling the story, and I believe that we are all better off because we are able to hear of the trials, tribulations, and successes of others. – Tiane Parris
