Director Biography - Avatara Ayuso

AVAT RA AYUSO trained in ballet (Conservatorio Profesional de Danza de Mallorca) and Linguistics (BA and MA, Universidad Complutense de Madrid) before moving to London in 2004, where she obtained a Certificate in Higher Education at London Contemporary Dance School. In 2005 she became part of the D.A.N.C.E. programme where she worked and performed internationally under the artistic direction of William Forsythe, Wayne McGregor, Frédéric Flamand and Angelin Preljocaj. In 2008, she obtained a Master Klass in Professional Dance from Palucca Schule Dresden. That same year she founded Ʌ.V.Ʌ Dance.
Avatâra has received several awards and grants among them the Arras Preis für Kunst und Kultur Dresden 2010, the Young Artist of Saxony 2012, the Lisa Ullman Travelling Fund, the Dance UK’s Business of Dance Bursary and Dancers’ Mentoring Programme. She is Associate Artist of the European Center for the Arts Hellerau Dresden and her company Associate Company of Creative Academy Slough (UK). She has been nominated for the 2015 National UK Dance Awards.
Alongside choreographing and running Ʌ.V.Ʌ Dance, Avatâra teaches professional and company class around Europe and keeps on performing and teaching regularly with Shobana Jeyasingh Dance (UK).
Since 2013 Avatâra has been directing and co-producing some dance film shorts that have been screened in various countries in diverse festivals (dance festivals, short festivals, culture festivals...).

Director Statement

Empowering women for a more equal society has been a motif for me through all her life and my dance work has become a channel to continue and strength this mission. I have travelled quite a lot thanks to dance and I want to share with the audience the story of of the strongest characters she found along her way: women and girls.
