Players will find themselves steeped in a brand new environment filled with terrifying new enemies, challenges, and exciting lore to expand the overarching Dark Souls 3 storyline.

Ashes of Ariandel Details

Famitsu has published some detailed information of the game, as follows:

  • “In this installment, we will tell the story of a world where cold snow continuously falls. Guided by a mysterious person, who will the wandering players meet and fight in this world, and does “Ahes of Ariandel” hold a meaning?”
  • The circle that symbolizes the Way of White becomes a new miracle to tear at enemies. That circlet, almost like a boomerang, returns to its caster after being thrown. For those who learn its uses, it will surely provide a unique style.”
  • “An unstable rope bridge suspended across a steep valley. A belfry without a bell rises beyond the violently fluttering snow.”
  • “A world covered in freezing snow”. Unlike the pale-sun enveloped dying Lothric, this new world with its snow storms is the center of the DLC. What awaits players here?
  • Will players be able to explore this harsh world, that unlike Lothric presents fearsome storms and cold winds stopping your progress?
  • A new pvp mode: The Hollow Arena: A new entry in Dark Souls 3 multiplayer, and unlike invasion PvP, your skills will be tested against fierce opponents. Start training now!
  • “A spell that fires a cold storm. Fitting for a spell born in the setting of this installment, a cold snow world.”

Is that what’s going on? I was wondering why a DLC trailer was showing off boss fights from the main game with seemingly no new armors, weapons or spells of any kind being displayed and just the player eating hits. The Nameless King’s attacks with his spear normally cause massive knockback as opposed to just stagger IIRC, right?

Good point you got there, mate!

Also, has everyone else noted that poise seems to be working in the display of boss fights against the Nameless King and Lorian?

if they meant to show the player character they would have used the usual knight garb like the rest of the trailer

corynx has a crow garb and its called the old crow he might have a relation tho the painted world else i just think its weird for then to use hi garb specifically

  4. Shoot, it would fit so perfectly if this big thing with the feathers and the soul-vessel is Velka… The way it scourges itself. The goddess of sin. WOW!

What, if we are actually lured into this place by her, so she can punish us for our sins? That might be, why she is peering into the soul-vessel. She looks at the Undead who claim the souls of lords (of Cinder) to prolong the age of fire… That would make perfect sense and she would make a great boss with that intention!

With the narrator saying, we shall show her flame… this is just so sinister. He guides us to her, so we find hope. But she is actually there to punish us.

“The Ash has come at last… *evil laughter*” It fits perfectly if you ask me.

    FROM you sexy motherf****ers!!!!

  5. HOLY SH**!!! I just realized that the person looking into the soul-vessel has black feathers and black hair and that the painted world of Ariamis had crow-people back in the first DS! Might that boss be Velka?!

That’s a player character in Corynx garb.

He is, however, doing some weird shit with that bonfire.

  7. I added some better translations from the famitsu article

It’s Hollow Arena, or at least that’s what I would go with (you never know what official translators will pick)

no one knows really, but I believe it to be. since that scene happens in the untended graves and there hasn’t been a Cornyx there for me before. (I believe this to be a hint at the DLC being linked to Pyromancy to some extent, please read my post from earlier for further details on why I think so)

No he meant the (Outfit of) Cornyx, which can be seen at 2:09 in the trailer when he puts the hands in the air in the untended graves.
I believe, this is where we enter the DLC. If not at a certain painting like another user pointed out earlier.

Cornyx is the DSIII pyromancy guy. Were you thinking of Quelana?

That flame breath is cool, though.

  12. some food for thought or my observations if you will: (actually, I might as well put a spoiler warning in here as well for some people that don’t want to speculate – wrong thread)

    1) Aria(!)ndel sounds strangely familiar to Aria(!)mis. The snow-covered level reminds me of this as well.

    2) the painted world of Ariamis was a place for souls who had nowhere to go because they were cast out. in the trailer the narrator says: “Unkindled one, if you are like us, another forlorn soul, with no place to call your own…”

    3) the voice also says “… then show my lady flame”.

I conclude from this the following:

The “lady” the voice refers to is actually the mother of pyromancy / a chaos witch / the lost sinner (the sin being recreating the first flame, i.e. the chaos flame i.e. the profaned flame). The voice straight up reminded me of Eingyy or whatever he was spelled. A servant of the witches of Izalith and pyromancy.

Further evidence for this is the flame-starved area the “lady” is in. out of her frustration of having failed to recreate the first flame she seeks flame. that’s why she peers into the (essence of the soul als Vendrick did) soul vessel.

Some deep *ish* I think. If this is all actually true, kudos to FROM for linking everything like this!

Oh and Kudos to skarekrow, who deciphered the runes on the titanite slab and sensing a forthcoming “Ice/snow/cold”-era. That’s what actually might happen, when the flames die out. You seem to enter the DLC from the Untended Graves (it’s in the trailer near the end) where the flame is extinguished already.

Awesome stuff for further speculating ’til October!!! Lore-hunters and -speculators rejoice!

  13. Oh, and I’m pretty sure the entrance will be the painting in the grand hall of Irithyll. The one that shows a rope bridge leading to a belfry. I need to verify my minds eye, but I’m pretty sure there’s a painting that depicts such a scene. Something close at least, anybody in game that can go snap a shot of those paintings?

Oh, it could definitely be the Painted World, but I’m just saying there’s also other potential possibilities.

Either way it looks really awesome.

… also, why is an old guy self-flagellating and trying to kill us with the Lordvessel?
