Deschampsia Cespitosa, commonly known as Tufted hair grass is a bushy evergreen grass with dark green, narrow leathery leaves, often growing up to 60cm in length. In June through to August the Deschampsia Cespitosa produces these cloud like, fluffy masses of silver and purple flowers which look elegant in the summer months, maturing into more of a golden yellow.
This compact grass is very easy to grow, often planted in borders or beds, also planted in wildflower schemes and any low maintenance garden. A lovely graceful plant for any keen gardener.
Deschampsia Cespitosa care
The Deschampsia Cespitosa thrives in a sunny, partially shaded location with moist well drained soils, often preferring acidic conditions. Generally pest free and requiring limited pruning, Deschampsia Cespitosa makes a great low maintenance garden plant.
We would recommend in winter to cut back the now faded flower heads, if the foliage also becomes tired and poor looking, cut these back hard. All of this encourages vigorous growth and a stunning floral display next season.
