Bergenia Purpurascens commonly known as Elephant is a clump forming evergreen perennial with oval shaped dark leaves which turn a beautiful deep red in winter months. In April and May this perennial, the Bergenia Purpurascens produces these erect, slender red stems with nodding, small clusters of stunning pink flowers.

This Bergenia is a fantastic perennial for ground cover, some will often underplant rose bushes to create colour at the lower level. Other recommended planting locations include flower beds, flower borders, banks and slopes and generally anywhere needing low, ground cover. To make a beautiful scene, we have planted in groups to really pump out the colour!

Bergenia Purpurascens care

Plant the Bergenia Purpurascens in a sunny or partially shaded location in the garden, thriving in moist, well drained soil. Be careful not to plant in extremely hot locations as leaves could scorch.

Protect from slugs and snails by taking precautions but generally disease free. The Bergenia Purpurascens is often popular with amateur gardeners as it requires very little pruning. We would recommend pruning any flowers which become faded. That being said, the Bergenia is a perfect plant for any gardener of any experience level and almost any garden!
