A smaller-leafed California native buckwheat that grows naturally in the Santa Monica Mountains among other areas in the coastal sage scrub communities. Although primarily used in restoration and revegetation projects, this species can be used in a variety of ornamental landscapes with great success. Highly durable and will naturalize after establishment in many landscapes, including the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys if planted during the recommended time of year. Excellent for erosion control and attracts butterflies. Small greyish green leaves that spread up to five feet but more commonly about 2-3'. Flowers are smaller and more delicate than on some of the other native buckwheats and do not form the same 'platforms'.
