EXCLUSIVE: Director Miguel Arteta has come aboard to develop Sorta Like A Rock Star for Fox Searchlight with Ol Parker (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel movies), who is adapting the book on which the film will be based. Arteta, who has directed numerous projects in the TV space, most recently directed Disney’s Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day for the big screen, which pulled in more than $100M globally. The deal with Arteta closed Friday.
Sorta Like A Rock Star, written by Silver Linings Playbook author Matthew Quick, was picked up by Searchlight a couple of years ago. The story follows Amber Appleton, a high school senior who secretly lives in the back of a school bus after being booted out of the house by her mother’s boyfriend. The bus, which is called Hello Yellow, is the same one that her mother uses to drive kids to school. With unyielding optimism, Amber is put to the test after a fatal tragedy.
Laura Sandler and Amanda Harlib wrote the first script for the film on spec before Parker came aboard for the book adaptation.
The film will be produced by Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen and Gotham Group’s Lee Stollman and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein.
WME, Management 360 and Lichter Grossman Nichols Adler rep Arteta. Parker is repped by UTA, the Knight Hall Agency and Management 360.
