Summary[edit]

Description

The Centaur was effectively a Cromwell with a 410hp Liberty engine in place of the Cromwell’s 600hp Rolls-Royce Meteor. It was only used in action by the Royal Marines Armoured Support Group during D-Day and was a failure as a battle-tank. They were mostly retained for driver-training in the UK but some were converted to Command Tanks and used by either tank formation commanders or artillery observation officers. The main gun was removed to make room in the turret for additional radio equipment and a fake gun was fitted outside so that it appeared identical to the armed vehicles it would accompany. This example is part of the Imperial War Museum collection and without any known service history it has been painted to represent a command tank of 7th Armoured Brigade photographed in Germany during 1945. It seen on display in the Land Warfare Hall at Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK.
