• Plantas suculentas arbustivas o arbóreas
• Ramas cilíndricas gruesas a muy delgadas, erectas o procumbentes.
• Costillas 4-13.
• Espinas fuertes, a veces muy largas.
• Flores en embudo o campana, diurnas,con espinas;amarillos, naranja o rojos.
• Frutos globulares y espinosos.
• Semillas muy ovaladas.
