Commonly grows beside streams, often amongst rocks. Has fine prickles along the branches. The fruit is a pale grey berry with purple flecks when mature.

Identifying Characteristics

Erect shrub to 3 m tall. The branchlets may end with a rigid spine. Leaves are scattered or crowded on short lateral branchlets and are minutely and irregularly toothed. The pale yellow flowers are recurved and may be solitary or in pairs. Flowers July-January.

Distinctive Features

The leaves are linear to oblong or narrowly obovate, 9-40 mm long and 2-9 mm wide. The flowers are unisexual, with male and female flowers on different plants.

Widespread across Victoria, except northern Victoria, including the Victorian Volcanic Plain. Often growing beside streams or amongst rocks. Also occurs in South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania.
