Allium giganteum
giant purple allium
Amaryllidaceae

Characteristics: A fun plant that looks like it would appear in a Dr. Seuss book. It holds itself up nicely but leans over in a slightly drunken way. Coconut size globe flower head, blooms for 6 weeks, and dies right back after flowers go. One of the largest alliums. Bulbous. A good perennial that will gradually increase in number in the following years.

Growing conditions: Sun. Shade makes them weaker and more prone to falling over. It looks good when not en masse.

Limitations: Can stand out and look kind of funny.
