This member of the Zamiaceae  family was given this name by Lawrence Alexander Sidney Johnson in 1959. It is found in New South Wales; Australia, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to 15 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 60 centimetres in height. The cones are green.

The genera name from Latin macro; 'big' and Zamia, another genus in the family. The species name refers to the narrow leaves: Greek stenos means 'narrow' and -merus  means 'part or member.
