This member of the Iridaceae family was given this name by Ernst Gottlieb von Steudel in 1840. It is found in the Cape Province of South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The bulb will grow to two and a half centimetre, the leaves reach 25 centimetres. The flowers are pale violet or blue.

The genus name is derived from the Dutch word baviaan, referring to the Chacma baboon, Papio ursinus, that consumes the corms of plants in the genus. The species name means 'emitting a smell, smelling; fragrant, sweet scented or smelling'.

It will flower in the very early spring.
