Canaan Dog
The Canaan Dog is a fascinating breed, steeped in ancient history and known for its rugged endurance, intelligence, and loyalty. The Canaan Dog is one of the oldest and most primitive dog breeds in existence. These dogs can be traced back to biblical times, over 4000 years ago, where they were used as herders and guardians by the Israelites in the land of Canaan. This land was situated in the territory of the southern Levant. During the time of the Roman Empire's conquest of Israel, many of these dogs were left behind and turned feral, surviving in the desert for centuries. In the 1930s, Dr. Rudolphina Menzel, a cynologist, was tasked by the Haganah (a Jewish paramilitary organization) to develop a service dog for their forces. Menzel chose to work with the semi-wild pariah dogs (Canaan dogs) found in the Negev desert. Over time, these dogs were domesticated and trained as service dogs for military tasks such as detecting mines and working as sentinels.

Genetic Predispositions and Health
The Canaan Dog breed is generally healthy, but can suffer from cataracts, cryptorchidism, degenerative myelopathy, distichiasis, elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, osteochondritis dissecans, patellar luxation, persistent pupillary membranes, progressive retinal atrophy, and von Willebrand disease (Type II).
Personality and Behavior
Canaan Dogs are intelligent, vigilant, and loyal, making them excellent watchdogs. They are known for their strong survival instincts and can be reserved and aloof with strangers. However, they are typically very affectionate with their families. Due to their herding and guarding history, they are independent and can be somewhat stubborn. These dogs require consistent, positive reinforcement training methods.
While they can adapt to various living conditions, they are active dogs that need a fair amount of exercise. A Canaan Dog will enjoy daily walks and play sessions, as well as mental stimulation, such as training exercises and interactive games. They tend to be very alert and aware of their surroundings, often barking to alert their owners of anything unusual.

The Canaan Dog is one of the American Kennel Club's (AKC's) oldest breeds.
According to the AKC, artifacts dating nearly 4,000 years ago included inscriptions of dogs that look like the Canaan.
They are named for Canaan, which was in the territory of the southern Levant. Today this land now includes Israel, and parts of bordering countries including the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, and southern parts of Syria and Lebanon.
